AHS Region 11 cordially invites all people interested in growing daylilies to attend our annual Winter Gathering in Independence, Missouri at the beautiful Hilton Garden Inn, conveniently located on Interstate 70, with easy access to a variety of restaurants, shopping areas, and the National Frontier Trails Museum or the Harry S Truman Presidential Library. Genealogy buffs will want to arrive early and visit the new Midwest Genealogy Center just minutes away from the hotel, part of the Midcontinent Public Library system. Additional points of interest in the Kansas City area include the Nelson-Atkins Museum, the Kemper Museum, the Arabia Steamboat Museum, and the National World War I Museum, a modern exhibition that meets world-class standards.
In other words, come early or stay late and treat yourself to some of the extra benefits of a winter getaway to the KC Metro area!
Our Winter Gathering is filled with programs of broad interest to gardeners. Since most registrants arrive before dinner time on Friday night, we have scheduled a fascinating program on Hostas after the dinner hour. Rob Mortko, “The Hosta Guy,” is a local celebrity who will have interesting points for people who like to create beautiful plantings in the shady areas around their home.
AHS members who want to begin or update their training as Garden or Exhibition Judges can take advantage of workshops and classes beginning late Friday afternoon.
Bonnie and Stan Holley, owners of Gold Coast Daylilies in northern California, are our featured daylily hybridizers. Their cultivars are known to thrive throughout our three-state region, and they will be bringing many of their plants for our FABULOUS live auction Saturday night. Bonnie and Stan are giving two presentations.
We have also invited expert home garden designers, Charles and Cynthia Lucius, of Columbus, Ohio. Their large residential property was one of the tour highlights of the 2012 National Convention. Charles and Cynthia will offer two programs on designing interesting home gardens with daylilies.
Saturday afternoon also includes a special program by Dave Niswonger on his work with irises and daffodils, for which he is nationally renowned!
Our Sunday morning activities include the always-popular session on the work of our Region 11 hybridizers. Rick Pearce, our new Regional Publicity Director, will coordinate the slide presentations, and Patti Waterman, our new Hybridizer Liaison, will moderate the program.
Registration Prizes
We will set aside three very choice daylilies from among those donated for our auctions to give a prizes in drawings for early registration. One drawing will include the first 25 registrants. Another will be for the first 50 (excluding the winner from the first 25), and a third will be for everybody else! The “Braggin’ Bell” prize will be awarded to the daylily club with the highest percentage of membership attending. Do plan to join us for a wonderful weekend getaway. Make it a Valentine’s Day present for someone special!
